The lighthouse, the whale, and the lobster

Jen and I have decided that a cadence of alternating years between intra- and international travel for vacations would be a wonderful way to ensure we don't neglect the many varied destinations of our own country.  As 2022 is already set for the trip of a lifetime to Egypt and Jordan, 2021 should be local.

My love and I were wed in July.  Consequently, our anniversary is during the hottest time of the year.  Perhaps in deference to this, our celebratory vacations have taken us to some of the hottest locations in the country: Orlando, New Orleans, San Antonio, the Grand Canyon.  This year, we felt it was time to flee the heat instead of embrace it.  So, we will be heading north, to a place neither of us has ever been.

Maine.

Specifically, Portland.  We hope to spot some whales, do some hiking on the beaches, visit lighthouses, and soak up some of the place's maritime traditions.  It's not a long trip, just the 8th to the 13th of July, but we're very excited.  It'll be my first time out of the area since our anniversary trip in 2019.

Why Maine?  In addition to being a cooler clime, it's far away, and new, and different.  I feel, and I think Jen does as well, that traveling is one of the best ways to enrich our lives, to gain experience and perspective, and imagine the world more complexly.  I hope that every trip we take gives us things to remember and talk about for the rest of our lives.
